Netgear D6200 Wireless Router Review

Testing

On to the testing part and one that would have almost not been possible, except for the WAN port (the grey one on the right of the above image). You see I have a cable internet package and not ADSL.

With the box proclaiming for phone line connections this almost proved an embarrassing email and me sending the item back. Thankfully this router has the aforementioned WAN port which allows you to connect it to a dedicated modem. Worrying over!

Once the D6200 was turned on, it was a simple case of connecting using the default password to one of the wireless connections.

Once done, the configuration page actually popped up of its own accord to help you set the router up for your connection, in my case it worked straight away with no configuration.

Otherwise it will ask you if you need a password etc for the connection. You can also follow a setup wizard which will take you each step of the way. Confusingly this is located under the advanced tab.

In the advanced section you can then also set up more in depth settings. In that tab with lots of subsections offering more precise control.

So how does it perform I hear you shouting to me as I write……well having used the D6200 for a few days now as a replacement for my ageing Edimax router and all I can say is it is good.

Wireless performance for me was exceptional, with it being able to comfortably stream HD content from my NAS to other devices. Even when skipping backwards and forwards through the files there was no noticeable delay before it started playing.

Wireless signal strength was a similar experience, with the 2.4G signal being okay but the 5G signal being very good with no black spots in my household that I could find. Dropouts if there were any were unnoticed, and even with multiple devices connected the D6200 once setup was extremely stable.

Once outside the house the signal did drop off, but I still had enough of a signal to stream stuff whilst sat in my garden.

The wireless card in my netbook which was used for the wireless tests was an Intel AC 7260.

LAN performance was again, very good with streaming not being an issue.
