devolo dLAN 1200 triple+ – Review

In Practice

Setting up the pair was simple enough and while I didn’t want to remove my current devolo pair. To avoid potential conflict, I plugged the new pair in their place during the setup.

Following the instructions, the correct way is to plug the primary adapter in first (the one that goes near the router)

Then plug the secondary adapter into the socket where you want it to go.

Afterwards, press the sync button on the primary adapter (the one close to the router) and make your way to the secondary unit and do the same.

All being well the “go light” will begin to shine white and the connection will be established.

If you have any other adapters the process is pretty much the same.

Software

devolo cockpit is still available and as the name suggests, provides a central location to manage the devices you have on your network. This includes making configuration changes and updating firmware etc.

This is quite limited for the devices that do not have additional features like Wi-Fi, but you can factory reset them, as well as control the LEDs.

The mobile app has been renamed to mydevolo and now requires an account to see your devices, this seems to be because of the smart home devices that devolo now sell.

The app even shows you a speed rating between the devices you have.

Performance

After having the devices set up, I looked back at the transfer rate in the devolo cockpit app to see how much it was reporting.

The main unit this time was located a bit further away than the Wi-Fi unit that was in place before due to the lack of Wi-Fi on this pairs second unit.

After initially plugging in the two units (I left my Wi-Fi unit plugged in at the time albeit in a newly found spot in another room)

The performance of the pair overall was quite satisfactory, coming in at around 557 Mbit/s as you can see in the above picture, this equates roughly to around a 70 MB/s transfer rate. I would like to note that it was showing 700Mbit/s when I first got it synced however the app said a firmware update was available and after installing it dropped down this much.

During my speed tests, when transferring items from my NAS these speeds were reflected quite accurately with transfers coming in at around 65 MB/s much like the 1200ac units I looked at last year.

Of course, your mileage may vary as it will depend on a number of factors for the speeds you will attain.

I have to admit though, I was happy with the performance of the adapters overall.
