SteelSeries Apex Mechanical – Teaser

There’s not much to go on besides a photo from their Facebook page, but it would appear that SteelSeries are jumping back on the mechanical keyboard bandwagon they pioneered way back in 2011. It would appear that an evolutionary step to the Apex series of keyboards is almost upon us.

The image does not show a full keyboard, but there is still a lot of information to take from the picture. What we can expect is a switch with 3mm of travel, with a 1.5mm actuation point, a 45cN weighting (like Cherry MX Red), seemingly 60 Million keystroke lifespan, all while including RGB lighting. With all this to hand, it is also clear that the switches will not be Cherry MX, but will likely be a SteelSeries variant of the Kaihl switches found in the recently released Razer BlackWidow Chroma.

Amazingly little is known about timescale or price for this keyboard but it is extremely interesting to watch the proliferation of this competitor switch series in gaming brands, especially if the quality that Cherry MX switches have become renown for, starts to creep its way into these Chinese alternatives.
