Plantronics RIG Headset Review
In Practice
I liked the design of the Plantronics RIG they look really nice as a set of standalone headphones as well as a headset. The detachable and exchangeable microphone means that when using it out on the go they doesn’t look out of place. The padding on the earcups was perfectly adequate and as stated earlier despite the firmness of the headband cushioning the overall headset remained genuinely comfortable throughout many hours worth of use I put them through.
The overall build quality of the headset is of a high standard, with each earcup feeling nice and sturdy. Though I did have one issue when testing, specifically the 3.5 mm port where the microphones attach into the headset. During my prolonged use this area often worked itself loose and caused some audio playback issues. This minor issue was fixed by adjusting the microphone back into the socket. That said the microphone isn’t all that adjustable, so when adjustments were made to the positioning, it often exacerbated the issue with it coming loose. For me in the end was fully resolved by way of using the in-line microphone. Performance of the microphones themselves were about par for the course, performing adequately during my gaming sessions.
There is a feature called Sidetone on the RIG as well. Sidetone allows you to hear the audio being transmitted through the attached microphone sort of like the “What U hear” option. Whilst subtle, it can be a bit jarring/annoying if you don’t normally game with the feature. It is also a feature that cannot be disabled unless you mute the microphone, which has the consequence of, well, muting the microphone.
The Plantronics RIG headset produces some nice sound overall. The RIG isn’t overly bassy like other headsets I have used and it has a nice balance overall especially when listening to music. In games and most films the audio is just as nice, but those wanting bigger booms are helped by the three EQ profiles which allow you to select a more bassy profile if needed but whilst I have used the headset this wasn’t needed.
Conclusion
In the end despite it’s flaws the Plantronics RIG headset is still a good headset. It has good audio quality and a near solid set of features. It does have a very jack of all trades feeling to it and with this comes the master of none as well, because of this it earns the DavePlays.co.uk Bronze award.
