Chrono Trigger (PC) Gets first patch
Chrono Trigger’s PC release to be honest was a bit of a clustertruck. It turned out that it was simply a ported version of the maligned mobile release including the mobile controls that were simply ported across with new legends for the keyboard.
It got worse when people started playing, with a horrible HQ renderer overshadowing the original graphics of the game making all the sprites unaturally bulky and odd whilst also adversely affecting the tiling of backgrounds.
A number of other issues popped up in the hundreds of negative reviews that plagued the Steam page for the game, warning people against playing the game. This included incorrectly looping music, the lack of a bestiary and some missing cutscenes.
Even though the game was an unexpected release when it appeared on the Steam store. Square-Enix was charging £12 for a mess of a port.
After these complaints and other sites started pulling the game apart, it was good to see that Square-Enix acknowledged there was a problem. Yesterday a patch was released which enables the original sprites. Which in my opinion vastly improve the look of the game.
This starts the long process of bringing Chrono Trigger back to what it was originally, although I have to admit, I would like Square-Enix to remaster it in the same way that Secret of Mana recently was.
